Herndon Optimist Youth Travel Basketball (HOYTB), is a member sports league of the Herndon Optimist Club of Herndon, Virginia. We are also a member club in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL), which is a highly competitive league.
HOYTB looks for players that are physically fit, enthusiastic, demonstrate good sportsmanship, concentrate on "total team play", and want to have fun, learn the game of basketball, and increase their individual basketball skills. Player development, teamwork, and sportsmanship are our priorities. Although we encourage each player to concentrate on a primary and secondary position, we don't train specific positions--we train basketball players. The long-range goal is to develop each player into a versatile athlete who has the skill and knowledge to play basketball at a high level of competition. This requires creating a program of skill acquisition based on developing specific skills, learning when and how to use a skill, making decisions on the court, combining skills with players on the team for effective team strategies, making transitions, and maintaining team focus.
The HOYTB league is more competitive and demanding than our house basketball league (Haley Smith Basketball). Participants play on teams where the skill levels are more consistent and play against stronger competition than in the house basketball league. Teams are chosen through a competitive tryout process, practices are two nights a week, and games are held on weeknights, Saturdays, and Sundays in gyms across Fairfax County, as well as in Alexandria, Arlington, Falls Church, and Loudoun counties. There are no minimum playing time rules as there are in our house league. Coaches determine the frequency and length of player's time on the court during games.
Players must be residents of Fairfax County, residing within zip codes 20170, 20171, or 20194. Players must have at least one parent or guardian reside within Fairfax County. In addition to these zip codes, each team is allowed 2 players that reside in Fairfax or Loudoun Counties but are not within the Herndon zip codes.
