Herndon Optimist Youth Travel Basketball (HOYTB), is a member sports league of the Herndon Optimist Club of Herndon, Virginia. We are also a member club in the Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (FCYBL), which is a highly competitive league.
HOYTB looks for players that are physically fit, enthusiastic, demonstrate good sportsmanship, concentrate on "total team play", and want to have fun, learn the game of basketball, and increase their individual basketball skills.
Player development is our priority. Although we encourage each player to concentrate on a primary and secondary position, we don't train specific positions--we train basketball players. The long-range goal is to develop each player into a versatile athlete who has the skill and knowledge to play basketball at a high level of competition. This requires creating a program of skill acquisition based on developing specific skills, learning when and how to use a skill, making decisions on the court, combining skills with players on the team for effective team strategies, making transitions, and maintaining team focus.
There are no minimum playing time rules as there are in our house league. Coaches will determine the frequency and duration of player's time on the court during games.
Boys in 4th-8th grade for the 2019-2020 school year are eligible to play, provided they are not participating on a house or high school basketball team.
Players must be residents of Fairfax County, residing within zip codes 20170, 20171, or 20194. Players must have at least one parent or guardian reside within Fairfax County. In addition to these zip codes, each team is allowed 2 players that reside in Fairfax or Loudoun Counties but are not within the Herndon zip codes.
Players will be required to provide both proof of grade and address. Acceptable forms of proof are:
- Proof of Grade and Address: Screenshot of Student Information Summary page in FCPS Student Information System (SIS)
- Proof of Grade: Report card from previous school year
- Proof of Address: Picture of utility bill address label with adult last name matching player's last name
Open gym days are made available in September. Player tryouts and drafts are held in early to mid-October. Team practices begin shortly after. Generally, practices are held in Fairfax County Public School gyms in the Herndon area twice a week for one and half hours until regular season games begin.
Regular season games begin late November or early December. Games are normally played throughout Fairfax County, but occasionally in Loudoun County. Games are played on both weeknights and weekends.
The regular season concludes with playoff and championship games in March.
